July 26th V Methley A Fenton win by 18 runs
And now to the final league match of the season. This game was our division's title decider. Methley were undefeated having won all their games apart from the tied match against us and we had also lost one other game. A win for us and we would win the division courtesy of having the better of the results between these two teams.
Methley won the toss and batted first scoring 254 losing 7 wickets including 2 run-outs. Finley 2 wickets for 2 runs with 2 wides, Kyle 2 wickets for 7 runs with 0 wides and little Charlie with 1 wicket for 8 runs and 2 wides were the pick of the bowlers. Charlie's wicket was a fantastic caught and bowled, the ball disappearing somewhere into the stratosphere before returning with snow on it. Not only was the catch good, but there was good judgement by 2 or 3 other fielders who could also have got to the catch but made the correct decision to leave it to Charlie. Great cricket. Another good catch was by Adam S at square leg off Finlay's bowling. It's also worth mentioning a great batting performance by a Methley player, Freddie, who scored 31 including a six and 5 fours. Overall, it was a very good bowling and fielding performance with some stunning dives on the cover boundary to stop fours, particularly one sprawling effort by Sam. Great stuff.
The batting started slowly. Finlay and Kyle ran a few quick singles but Fin was bowled so after 2 overs the scoreboard was still stuck on 200. Fin's first 7 balls went for 2 quick singles, 1 bowled and 4 dots. He was obviously just warming up. His final 5 balls went for 4 fours and a six scoring 19 in total after adjusting for the lost wicket. Kyle (13) also got the batting reply off to a good start with a couple of good fours taking the score to 232 by the time the next batting pair, Sam and Charlie, came to the wicket. Sam scored a steady 8 while Charlie scored a kamikazi 10 but with 2 run-outs. It was only in his last 3 balls that he stopped playing hit and run. 240. Ben and Kiam came to the wicket and Ben was promptly out 2nd ball. A few singles and dot balls followed and then Kiam was out and the score board was heading in the wrong direction. Kiam (13) was obviously fed up by now and he dispatched his final 3 balls for a six and 2 fours and Ben also hit a four and we were just in the lead with 256.
No worries then with our final pair coming to the wicket. Not quite. Josh was bowled to his first ball and 3 balls later Adam walloped his stumps trying to hit a leg side ball. 248 and the scoreboard was again going in the wrong direction. Games like this are far more stressful for the parents than the kids. Finally things started to get back to normal and, with some good running between the wickets, a few fours as well as a 6 from Josh and we were finally quite relaxed when Josh was out again off the final ball he faced, caught at mid-wicket trying to decide whether to wallop the ball or play forward defensive. At this age level of cricket, if in doubt, wallop it. A total score of 272 and an 18 run win. The batting performance was good apart from the fact that we lost 8 wickets. Some of the running between the wickets was very good and that probably was the main difference between the teams.
Well done boys, a good win and a stressful morning for the parents! This win meant that we topped the green division and that we are now in a play-off against the winners of the Blue Division to see who are the Under 9 champions.
July 19th V Saxton H Fenton win by 81 runs
Fenton 314. Saxton 233
July 12th V Walton A Fenton win by 88 runs
We batted first scoring 302 only losing 2 wickets, both run-out with Fin (20), Taylor (17), Sam (17), Josh (15) and Kyle (17) doing well. It's worth remembering that, in pairs cricket, batsmen only face 12 balls in total, so to score more than 12 is a good effort. In reply we restricted Walton to 214 taking 9 wickets including 3 run-outs. Taylor 2 wickets for 5 runs with 0 wides and Sam with 1 wicket for 3 runs and only 1 wide were the pick of the bowlers.
July 5th Friendly V Hillam H Fenton win by 78 runs
This wasn't a league match so the team that played was mostly made up of next year's Under 9's. We batted first scoring 292. Everybody scored runs contributing between 10 and 16 runs per person throughout the team. We restricted Hillam to 214 taking 7 wickets in total. Well done to Jay M (c), Liam L, George M, Sachin K, William S, Samuel M, Kyle V and Adam S.
June 28th V Ledsham A Fenton win by 114 runs
We batted first scoring 319 with Fin (31), Ben (17), Kiam (17), Josh (18) and Eddy S (23) being the chief scorers. In reply Ledsham were restricted to 205 losing 10 wickets in the process. The pick of the bowlers were Eddie L (3) and Eddy S and Taylor with 2 wickets each.
June 21st V Barwick A Fenton lost by 34 runs
Barwick scored 267 and lost 4 wickets with Fin getting 2 and the other wickets being run-outs. This total included over-throws costing 5 runs on 3 occasions. Normally we are a good fielding team but for the first time this season mistakes started to happen. The throwing at the stumps was too hard for the wicket keeper and the backing up was too slow to respond. Eddie S was the pick of the bowlers conceeding no runs or wides in his 2 overs. In reply we lost too many wickets, 9 in total, during our innings of 233. Eddy S (16) batted well as did Eddie L (11).
June 18th V Collingham H Cup Fenton lost by 73 runs
June 14th V South Milford A Match cancelled (again) because of rain.
June 7th V Saxton Fenton win by 84 runs
We restricted Saxton to 210. Jay and Josh got a bowled wicket each, Fin got a caught and bowled and there were 3 run outs. Another good bowling and fielding perfomance with Saxton not scoring any boundaries. Fin (24), Eddy S (20) were the top scorers this week.
May 31st V Ledsham H Fenton win by 123 runs
Three days after the cup match, we played Ledsham again, this time in a league match. Ledsham batted first and we restricted them to 211. Kiam had the best bowling figures 2 overs, 2 maidens, 1 wicket for 0 runs. The team batted well again particularly Ben(24), Kiam (28), Josh (23) and Eddy (26). Another good performance.
May 28th V Ledsham H Cup Match Fenton win by a lot
Ledsham arrived with a young side. They batted first and made 232 chiefly due to Jack who scored 25. Eddie S and Taylor bowled well. What happened next was extraordinary. Fin (34) and Taylor (40) opened the batting, with a deluge of 4's and three 6's, genuine scoring shots with Ledsham only bowling three wides. Youngsters, Sam(13) and Charlie (19), and then Ben (30) and young Adam (19) carried on before Josh (33) and Eddy (29) wrapped things up with another good partnership. Fenton finished with 415. To score 300 is good going: to score 400 plus is unheard of. It was an awesome batting performance. You had to be there.
May 24th V Walton H Walton conceded
May 17th V Methley h Match tied. Methley 297. Fenton 297.
Methley batted first and made 297 with the loss of 3 wickets. Our bowling was a bit more ragged than normal, but we were bowling into a very strong wind. The pick of the bowlers by some distance was Ben M who bowled two good overs with no wides or no balls, claiming 1 wicket for 2 runs. Fin W also took a wicket, caught and bowled. The 3rd wicket was a good run out by Ben M. The run chase started slowly with Charlie and Sachin putting on 5. Fin (21) and Kiam B (11) picked up the pace, Fin hitting 3 consecutive 4's in one over. Ben M (12, including one six) and Eddie L (7) continued the chase and, with three pairs having batted, there was 260 on the board, 38 runs required. The scene was set for Josh ably supported by young Adam, playing in his second game of pairs cricket. In the 12 balls he faced, Josh scored 36 with 3 sixes and 4 fours. As the final over started we had 295. The final Methley bowler steamed in, his run-up starting on the boundary. His first ball disappeared over mid-on for 6. We were in the lead. The Methley bowler kept steaming in from the boundary. On the fifth ball of the over, unfortunately Adam was bowled. We're now one run behind. Adam rescued the situation with the final ball, glancing the ball to fine leg, another quick single and the match was tied. A good game played in a good spirit, watched by an increasingly animated audience, and probably a fair result. Well played lads. Good batting, Good fielding. Lets have straighter bowling next week. Thank you to Dan L for scoring and thanks to Sachin's mum for manning the kitchen.
May 12th V Hillam a Fenton win by 175 runs
Fenton 349 for 1. Fenton batted very well with everybody getting into double figures. Josh 32, Adam Sykes (in his first match) 17, Eddie L 16, Kiam 12, Jay 12, Ben 11, Finlay 29, Eddy S 23.
